Water Ring Vacuum Pumps for Vacuum Concentration & Evaporation

2025-04-17

Water ring vacuum pumps provide the vacuum conditions that make concentration and evaporation processes more efficient, controllable and gentle on heat-sensitive products. Designed for demanding process environments, they continuously remove non-condensable gases and vapor loads so evaporators can operate at the intended pressure and temperature.

Process advantage: By reducing pressure inside the evaporator, a vacuum system lowers the boiling point of the liquid—supporting evaporation at a lower temperature while helping protect product quality.

Where it delivers value

Pharmaceuticals & bioprocessing — gentle concentration of antibiotics, enzyme preparations, protein solutions and botanical extracts.

Food & beverage — concentration and solvent or moisture removal where temperature control matters.

Chemicals & fine chemicals — reliable vapor handling for process evaporation and recovery duties.

Cosmetics & personal care — repeatable vacuum conditions for batch concentration and purification steps.

Engineered Around Your Process

Vacuum Concentration: The Principle

A liquid’s boiling point changes with pressure: as pressure is reduced, the liquid can boil at a lower temperature. In a vacuum concentrator or evaporator, this makes it possible to remove water or solvent without exposing the product to unnecessarily high heat.

Water ring vacuum pumps create and sustain this low-pressure environment. Their continuous pumping action supports stable operating conditions across a broad range of evaporation duties, from single-effect systems to multi-effect, falling-film and thin-film evaporators.

What the Vacuum System Must Handle

During concentration and evaporation, the vacuum system is typically required to remove:

Non-condensable gases — air ingress and gases released from the process that can disturb the vacuum level.

Water vapor — generated as moisture is removed from the product stream.

Solvent vapor — where organic solvents are part of the process, subject to appropriate system design and materials selection.

By continuously extracting these loads, the pump helps the evaporator maintain a stable negative pressure. That stability is essential for repeatable boiling conditions, reliable throughput and consistent product concentration.

Why Water Ring Vacuum Pumps

Lower-temperature evaporation — supports concentration at reduced boiling temperatures, helping protect heat-sensitive ingredients and active compounds.

Process stability — maintains vacuum conditions that support consistent evaporation performance and batch-to-batch repeatability.

Vapor-tolerant operation — well suited to wet-process duties where vapor is an inherent part of the load.

Configurable solutions — available as stand-alone pumps or as part of engineered vacuum packages matched to the target pressure, pumping speed and process conditions.

For heat-sensitive products: Lower operating temperatures can help reduce the risk of thermal degradation, color change and loss of activity—critical considerations in pharmaceutical, biological and natural-extract applications.

Selecting the Right Vacuum Solution

Pump selection should be based on the actual process, not simply the previous installation. Our engineering team reviews the required ultimate pressure, effective pumping speed, vapor composition, operating temperature, cooling-water conditions, materials compatibility and control strategy before recommending a configuration.

Key Selection Inputs

Parameter Why It Matters
Target vacuum level Sets the required operating pressure and achievable evaporation temperature.
Pumping speed Ensures the system can handle vapor and gas loads while maintaining stable vacuum.
Vapor & gas composition Guides the choice of pump arrangement, materials and optional separation or recovery equipment.
Process variability Supports a design that remains reliable across changing batch sizes, temperatures and product formulations.

From Individual Pumps to Engineered Packages

Depending on the process target, a vacuum solution may include:

Single liquid-ring pumps — for robust vapor-handling duties and stable vacuum operation.

Roots–liquid-ring combinations — for applications requiring lower pressure or higher effective pumping speed.

Integrated vacuum packages — coordinated pumping, separation, cooling and control components designed around the application.

The objective is not simply a larger pump; it is a vacuum system that matches the real process load and supports the required operating window.

Application Example: Upgrading a Cosmetics Evaporation Line

A cosmetics manufacturer in South Korea was preparing a new production facility in Chungcheongnam-do. During trial production, the original vacuum configuration could not consistently achieve the planned purity and production efficiency targets. The process required approximately 20 mbar vacuum and a design pumping speed of 4,200 m³/h.

After reviewing the application and drawing on experience with comparable concentration processes, our engineers identified the vacuum system as the limiting factor. We proposed a customized Roots–liquid-ring vacuum package using a Roots booster with a 2BE liquid-ring vacuum pump.

Designed Duty

Target vacuum 3.3 mbar
Pumping speed 4,320 m³/h

The proposed configuration was validated with the customer’s engineering team against their operating data. After commissioning, the customer reported that the first production batch met its quality requirements, while the redesigned line delivered improved energy efficiency versus the older production line.

Important note: Actual performance depends on process conditions, cooling-water temperature, gas composition, installation design and operating practice. Every vacuum package should be engineered and validated for the specific application.
